Popcorn
Plain and faintly sweet on its own, mostly a vehicle for butter, salt, or whatever seasoning gets tossed on.
Lens analyzedPopcorn is a specific variety of corn kernel that puffs up into a light, crunchy piece when heated, unlike other corn types that just char or scorch. It's sold as loose kernels for popping at home, or already popped and bagged with seasoning. A batch made from raw kernels costs far less per serving than pre-popped bags.
Where it comes from
Indigenous peoples across the Americas were popping corn long before European settlers arrived, using heated sand or direct fire rather than a stovetop pot. It became tied to American movie theaters in the early 1900s, cheap enough to sell at a markup that kept theater ticket prices low.
Buying it
Check whether kernels are labeled for stovetop, air popping, or microwave use, since the moisture content and packaging differ by method, and choose plain kernels if you want full control over seasoning.
Storing it
Unpopped kernels do best sealed away from humidity, since damp kernels pop unevenly or not at all. Already-popped popcorn is far more fragile: box it up airtight and finish it within a few days before it turns chewy and stale.
Keeps about 6 months in the pantry.
