Blackberries

Deep and slightly tart, turning sweeter as it ripens further.

Lens analyzed

Blackberries are dark purple-black aggregate berries made up of many small drupelets clustered around a soft core, unlike raspberries, which pull free of their core when picked. They carry a deep, slightly tart flavor that turns sweeter as they fully ripen. Their soft, juicy texture also makes them prone to bruising and quick spoilage.

Where it comes from

Blackberries grow wild across much of North America, Europe, and Asia, long foraged from bramble bushes before cultivated varieties were bred for larger, more uniform fruit. They remain popular both as a garden bramble fruit and a commercially grown crop sold fresh, frozen, or in preserves.

Buying it

Choose berries that look plump and deeply colored without pooling juice in the container, which signals crushed or overripe fruit. Avoid any container with visible mold, since it spreads quickly between berries.

Storing it

Refrigerate blackberries unwashed in a single layer, where they stay good for about four days; wash them just before eating.

Keeps about 4 days in the fridge.

In season

Peak season is June–August, though it's available year-round.

Grown locally in summer in much of North America; imports keep them available most of the year.
