Cranberry juice
Sharply tart on its own, or tangy-sweet in the more common sweetened cocktail form.
Lens analyzedCranberry juice is pressed from tart cranberries, usually sold sweetened since straight cranberry juice is sharply sour on its own. Many bottles are actually a cranberry juice cocktail or blend, diluted and sweetened rather than pure juice.
Where it comes from
Cranberry juice grew from cranberry-growing regions of North America, where the tart berry was processed into juice as a way to use the harvest beyond fresh and dried cranberries, becoming a widely recognized supermarket beverage by the mid-20th century.
Buying it
Check the label closely, since "cranberry juice cocktail" contains added sugar and water and much less actual cranberry juice than a bottle labeled 100% juice.
Storing it
An unopened bottle keeps in the pantry; refrigerate after opening and use within about ten days to two weeks.
Keeps about 1 month in the fridge.
