Instructions

  1. 1

Slice the bread: Cut the Cuban bread loaf horizontally into sandwich-sized portions.

  2. 2

Layer the condiments: Spread a generous layer of yellow mustard on both the top and bottom halves of the inside of the bread. (Authentic Cuban sandwiches do not use mayonnaise).

  3. 3

Build the sandwich: Layer the ingredients in this exact order to ensure optimal melting: Swiss cheese on the bottom, then the sweet ham, the roast pork, the dill pickles, and finally another layer of Swiss cheese on top.

  4. 4

Butter the outside: Close the sandwich and spread butter generously on the outside crusts, top and bottom.

  5. 5

Press and toast: Place the sandwich in a hot sandwich press (plancha) or a skillet with a heavy cast-iron pan pressing down on it. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side until the bread is flat, crispy, and the cheese is fully melted. Cut diagonally and serve.
