Heat the olive oil in a wide saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 6 to 8 minutes until soft and translucent but not browned.

Pour in the tomatoes with their juices, crushing each one by hand or with a wooden spoon as you add them. Stir in the salt and sugar.
