Spicy tuna roll
Spicy and creamy from the sauce, with a clean, mild raw tuna flavor underneath.
Lens analyzedA spicy tuna roll is a sushi roll made with raw tuna mixed with a spicy mayo-based sauce, rolled with rice and nori, then sliced into bite-sized pieces. It's sold pre-made at grocery store sushi counters and restaurants, meant to be eaten cold and fresh rather than reheated. Sesame seeds or a light garnish are usually pressed onto the outside.
Where it comes from
Spicy tuna rolls developed in the United States as a Japanese-American sushi innovation, adding a spicy mayo mix to raw tuna rather than serving it plain as in traditional Japanese sushi. It's since become one of the most ordered sushi rolls in North America, found in grocery store sushi cases as often as restaurants.
Buying it
Buy it as close to when you'll eat it as possible, and check that the package is well chilled at the store rather than sitting at room temperature.
Storing it
Refrigerate it immediately and eat it the same day, since raw fish spoils quickly and doesn't hold up overnight the way cooked sushi rolls can.
Keeps about 1 day in the fridge.
