Apple Brown Betty

An old-fashioned baked dessert of tender cinnamon-kissed apples layered with buttery breadcrumbs.

Instructions

    Preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C).

    Place the sliced apples in a large bowl and toss with the flour and about 1/2 cup of the granulated sugar until evenly coated.

    Brush a 9x13-inch baking pan with some of the melted butter and sprinkle the bottom with 1 cup of the breadcrumbs. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar over the crumbs, then top with half of the apples.

    Repeat the layers with the remaining breadcrumbs and apples. Drizzle the top with the remaining melted butter and sprinkle evenly with the superfine sugar.

    Bake on the middle rack until the apples are bubbling and the top is browned, about 45 minutes.

    Cool on a rack, then cut into squares and serve warm or at room temperature.
