Grilled Cheese Sandwich

A hot sandwich consisting of melted cheese between toasted bread.

Instructions

    Evenly spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter (or a thin layer of mayonnaise) on one side of each slice of bread.

    Preheat a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Low and slow is the secret to perfectly melted cheese without burning the bread.

    Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in the skillet. Immediately layer the American and cheddar cheeses evenly over the bread.

    Top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up.

    Cook undisturbed for 3-4 minutes until the bottom bread is a rich, golden-brown and crisp.

    Carefully flip the sandwich with a wide spatula. Cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes, pressing down lightly, until the cheese oozes and the second side is equally golden. Serve warm.
