Watermelon
Sweet, juicy, and refreshing, with a crisp, watery bite.
Lens analyzedWatermelon is a large, high-water-content fruit with a firm green rind and sweet, juicy flesh usually pink to red, though yellow-fleshed varieties exist too. Its high water content makes it especially refreshing served cold.
Where it comes from
Watermelon originated in Africa, where wild ancestors were far more bitter and pale than today's sweet cultivated fruit, and selective breeding over centuries produced the sweet red flesh now standard. It spread along ancient trade routes into the Mediterranean, Middle East, and eventually the Americas.
Buying it
Look for a firm rind with a dull rather than shiny finish, and check for a creamy yellow field spot on one side, a sign it ripened resting on the ground.
Storing it
Keep a whole watermelon at room temperature until cut, then refrigerate any cut portions wrapped tightly and eat within about a week.
Keeps about 7 days in the fridge.
In season
Peak season is June–August, though it's available year-round.
Best quality and price are usually in summer across North America; off-season melons are commonly shipped from warmer regions.
