Brownies in a Jar

Layered dry brownie mix in a quart jar that bakes into rich, fudgy chocolate-pecan brownies, ideal as a homemade gift.

    Pour the sugar into a clean, dry one-quart jar and press down firmly to level.

    Add the cocoa powder and press down firmly, then wipe the inside of the jar with a dry paper towel.

    Pour in the chopped pecans, spreading them into an even layer.

    Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt, then pour into the jar on top and seal. (Attach baking directions to the jar if giving as a gift.)

    To bake: empty the jar of mix into a large bowl and stir to blend thoroughly. Add 3/4 cup melted butter or margarine and 4 beaten eggs, and mix until completely blended.

    Spread the batter into a lightly greased 9x13-inch pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes, until set. Cool in the pan, then cut into 2-inch squares.
