Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). For the base, cream together the softened butter, shortening, and 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar until smooth, then blend in 1 1/2 cups flour. Pat the mixture evenly onto the bottom of a 15x10-inch pan and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until lightly browned.

  2. 2

For the topping, whisk together 1 3/4 cups flour, the baking powder, and salt; set aside. Chop the apples to equal about 2 cups.

  3. 3

Melt 1/4 cup butter in a large saucepan over medium heat, then blend in the brown sugar, lemon zest, eggs, vanilla, and chopped apples. Stir the reserved flour mixture into the apple mixture until combined; the batter will be thick.

  4. 4

Spread the apple topping evenly over the baked base and return to the 350°F oven for 25 minutes, until set and golden.

  5. 5

While the bars are still warm, make the cinnamon glaze by whisking together 1 cup powdered sugar, the ground cinnamon, and milk until smooth. Spread the glaze over the warm bars, then let cool before cutting into squares.
