French Dip

A hot sandwich consisting of thinly sliced roast beef on a "French roll" or baguette, served au jus.

    Preheat the broiler. Slice the French rolls horizontally, leaving the back edge slightly attached, and place them on a baking sheet.

    In a medium saucepan, combine the beef consommé, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat to create the 'au jus'.

    Using tongs, dip the thin slices of roast beef into the hot jus for just 15-20 seconds to warm the meat and infuse it with flavor, being careful not to overcook it.

    Pile the warm, dripping roast beef generously onto the bottom halves of the French rolls. Top the beef with slices of provolone cheese.

    Place the sandwiches under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is completely melted and bubbly, and the edges of the rolls are toasted.

    Close the sandwiches and serve immediately with individual ramekins of the hot, savory au jus for dipping.
