    Trim off the white pithy ends of the lime and cut it into 8 wedges, then drop them into a sturdy old-fashioned glass.

    Add the granulated sugar directly over the lime and muddle firmly for about 20 seconds, pressing and twisting to release the juice and oils from the peel without pulverizing the rind into bitterness.

    Pour in the cachaça and stir well so the sugar begins to dissolve into the lime juice.

    Pack the glass with crushed ice, give it a final brisk stir to chill and combine, and serve at once with a short straw.
