Instructions

  1. 1

Heat the oil and 1 tbsp of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized and sweet. Remove and set aside.

  2. 2

Form the ground beef into an oval patty that roughly matches the shape of your rye bread. Season generously on both sides with salt and pepper.

  3. 3

In the same skillet, over medium-high heat, cook the beef patty for 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Remove the patty and wipe the skillet clean.

  4. 4

Butter one side of each slice of rye bread using the remaining 1 tbsp of butter.

  5. 5

Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in the skillet over medium-low heat. Layer with 1 slice of Swiss cheese, the cooked patty, the caramelized onions, and the second slice of cheese. Top with the remaining bread, butter-side up.

  6. 6

Grill slowly for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the rye is deeply toasted and the Swiss cheese is entirely melted. Slice in half and serve hot.
