Grapes
Sweet and juicy, ranging from tart to very sweet depending on variety and ripeness.
Lens analyzedGrapes are small, juicy fruits that grow in clusters on vines, eaten fresh as a snack or used in salads, sauces, and baking. Varieties range from seedless green and red table grapes to darker, sweeter black grapes.
Where it comes from
Grapes have been cultivated for thousands of years across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Central Asia, both for eating fresh and for winemaking, and table grape varieties bred for eating rather than pressing became a global grocery staple.
Buying it
Choose grapes still firmly attached to a green, flexible stem, with plump, unwrinkled skin and no soft or leaking spots at the bottom of the bunch.
Storing it
Refrigerate grapes unwashed in their original bag or a ventilated container, where they keep for one to two weeks; wash just before eating.
Keeps about 10 days in the fridge.
In season
Peak season is August–October, though it's available year-round.
North American grapes are strongest in late summer and early fall, with imports filling much of the rest of the year.
