    Pour the canned fava beans along with their liquid into a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat until they come to a gentle simmer.

    Simmer for 10 minutes to soften the beans and slightly reduce the liquid.

    Using a potato masher or the back of a large spoon, partially mash the beans in the pot—leaving about half of them whole for texture.

    In a small mortar, pound the garlic with the salt into a fine paste. Stir the garlic paste, ground cumin, and lemon juice into the beans.

    Remove from heat and transfer the mixture to a serving bowl.

    Drizzle the extra virgin olive oil heavily over the top, then garnish with the chopped fresh parsley and diced tomato. Serve warm with pita bread.
